SF Series: #3 When can I stop wearing all the hats & who do I hire first?

THE PROBLEM

Founders often build their financial models backwards–and there are two stages to this faulty foundation.

  1. You’ve assumed revenue will show up: you’re going to get sales and have enough money, and you’ve made a plan to spend that money–on business infrastructure, on team members, on R & D, and you’ve been taking it on faith that everything will work out, but this leads to a disconnection from what actually has to happen to drive sales.
  2. You’ve been filling in blanks saying, “I’ll hire people at this point in my business,” when you’ve got enough money. But I, and every other early-stage startup veteran, will tell you–that’s absolutely not true. You cannot count on revenue to show up. It gets there when it gets there, but only if you’re doing the things that need to get done.

THE SOLUTION

Instead of letting you say, “Here’s how much revenue I’m going to generate,” Fric asks you to get clear on what you’re going to DO.

We ask you to focus on the activities that drive revenue, that drive how you deliver your product or service, that drive how you keep customers happy.

And a key part of each activity is who’s going to do what. When you start thinking about who does what, you get more clarity around what actually needs to be done.

Fric tells you–for each team member–what the workload and time allocation looks like on a monthly basis. This makes it really easy to identify where you’re underallocating resources right now and what you’re going to need to hire for in the future.

Fric helps you figure out which team member is already overloaded—the role for which you have the most work. And that’s who you’ll need to hire first.

Bonus: for any team member who’s an employee, Fric automatically calculates the employer taxes – usually 7-10% of their salary – for you. That way you know that you’ve budgeted enough money to cover the full cost instead of scrambling for cash after you hire them.

No more guessing, no more worrying whether you can afford to hire, just clear visibility into what needs to get done and when, so you can focus on the big picture and your company can start making money.
